This finely made model canoe is believed to be the work of Mani Kueyik as her name is written in ink on its underside. She lavished much attention on this piece with the deft modeling of the birchbark canoe, the bold quilled floral imagery, and the inclusion of a birchbark bedroll, a water drum and drum beater. Mani Kueyik placed a spirit effigy, or “man board,” inside the canoe at either end. This stylized outline of a human figure had great spiritual importance in both the creation of life-size canoes and model canoes.
