Pouches such as this one were decorated with thunderbirds or horned underwater panthers. The long tail of this horned underwater panther is clearly visible, but the horns on his head are somewhat worn. Underwater panthers resided in the watery underworld and could cause great calamity by lashing their long tails around, creating rough water or whirlpools. They could also bestow special curative blessings. Watergoing travelers paid their respect to these powers by offering tobacco.
