Wendat (Huron) women often decorated their husband’s knife sheaths with exceptionally fine embroidery. In the 18th century French nuns taught Wendat (Huron) women floral embroidery styles of the Renaissance. The women used locally available moosehair to execute this work and quickly became renowned for their mastery of the aesthetic. Ancient porcupine quillwork traditions are seen on this sheath’s border of orange dyed and undyed quills which frame the floral imagery.
