A bandolier bag is a large beaded bag that has a wide shoulder strap. “Bandolier” is a French word used to describe a shoulder belt that had loops or pockets for cartridges. Indicative of wealth and social standing, bandolier bags were often carried in pairs, their straps worn crosswise across the chest. Women favored both geometric and floral patterns when designing bandolier bags for their husbands. Two different techniques were used for the bead decorated areas on this bag. The black velvet is decorated using a spot stitch and the large panel and shoulder strap is woven beadwork.
