Miniature of James Fenimore Cooper

Miniature of James Fenimore Cooper
This watercolor miniature on ivory is the earliest known image of James Fenimore Cooper. The figure is slightly turned to the left, looking off into the distance. He is wearing a dark navy blue coat with gold, circular buttons, a cravat with a turned collar, and a white ruff that peaks out from the jacket collar. His hair is disheveled. On the back is a woven piece of hair- it is dark brown with a few grey strands. The frame is made out of copper or a copper alloy. It is beaded around the inmost band, and is topped with a large loop of the same metal for display. Similar smaller beading encicles the glass window displaying the woven hair.
