Description:
In this painting, the artist Theodore Robinson depicts a farm couple sharing a drink of water during a brief respite in haying. Robinson trained in Chicago and New York City before spending several years in Paris and Giverny where he became one of the leading American Impressionists. At the time this painting was completed, he had returned to New York City, but traveled to Wisconsin, New Jersey, Long Island, and Nantucket during the summer of 1882 in search of a quality of light that resembled that of Giverny. Haying may represent any of those locations.
