The location depicted in this painting is "Il Ponte di Rialto" (Rialto Bridge), a very famous spot in Venice, both historically and touristically speaking. The bridge connects two little islands that were among the first to be inhabited when the barbaric invasions started, since that was one of the highest places on the sea level in the lagoon. The bridge itself has a long history: first it was made from wood with shops on the two sides, now it is a stone one, still with shops. The features of the figures are strictly New England in nature, as are their outfits.
