Description:
Medal presented to James Fenimore Cooper to commemorate the completion of the Erie Canal, in 1825. Figures of Pan and Neptune on obverse; eagle atop half-globe and shield, with canal locks at left, three-masted ship and long horizontal building at right, on reverse. Marks: Stamped into medal along top edge of obverse: "UNION OF THE ERIE WITH THE ATLANTIC". Stamped into medal at bottom of obverse: "R. DEL." (lower left) and "W.SC". Stamped into medal along top edge of reverse: "ERIE CANAL COMM. 4 JULY 1817 COMP. 26 OCT 1825". Stamped into medal at bottom of reverse: "EXCELSIOR" (on banner beneath the eagle, globe, and shield), and "C.C. WRIGHT SC:/ 1826/PRESENTD BY THE CITY OF N. YORK". Scratched onto medal on reverse, center top, is "441" (above eagle).
