Description:
This drawing is based upon a lithograph printed by D.W. Kellogg & Co. of Hartford, Connecticut, that was issued during the 1832 Presidential campaign or at the beginning of Jackson's second term. The image recalls his victory over British forces at New Orleans during the War of 1812. Rather than being depicted in the battle, Jackson appears in full regalia, astride a spirited and equally decorated horse, tipping his hat as if addressing an admiring crowd. The rider on a rearing horse is a composition used since the Renaissance to depict famous generals and important leaders, the most effective of which is probably Jacques Louis David's 1805 portrait of Napoleon.
