Description:
Sitting Bull depicts a moment of intense battle as both he and his adversary fire their weapons. He shows himself flamboyantly dressed with red and blue body paint and an eagle’s head attached to the top of his full, trailing war headdress. His adversary, on the other hand, appears as an undistinguished warrior lacking any war honors. The numerous hoof prints indicate that this encounter was part of a larger battle. This Sitting Bull, an Oglala Sioux, was a friend of the U.S. Army and should not be mistaken for the famous Hunkpapa Sioux Sitting Bull who defeated General George A. Custer in 1876.
