Tobacco was considered a gift from the creator and was used during religious ceremonies and as traditional medicine. The ritual use of pipes and tobacco at important events was widespread in North America. The effigy on this pipe is facing the smoker, thereby providing a focus for the smokers’ thoughts. The effigy also served as an intermediary between man and the supernatural, the smoke carrying prayers to the Creator.
