Human faces carved on war clubs have a long history in Plains and Eastern Woodlands traditions. The carving of this war club is elemental in detail and probably represents a spirit with a human face. After the introduction of firearms, war clubs were no longer used in combat, but they retained their symbolic status. and were carried in dances and ceremonials.
