Joyce Growing Thunder Fogarty won Best in Show at the Santa Fe Indian Market in 1988 with this Horse Medicine Bag. Designed to be placed around a horse’s neck as spiritual protection, it can also be used as a woman’s dance accessory. The beadwork design on the bag is a classic Assiniboine style popular in the late 19th century. Fogarty draws upon elder family members’ tribal knowledge as inspiration for her art, and her art in turn honors her ancestors.
