This vest is decorated with the symbols and revivalist religious movement founded by William Faw- Faw (Was-no-she) in the 1890s. The Faw-Faw movement advocates a series of prescribed dances and rituals and promise to return to traditional Native ways and values and discard the corrupting influences of the Euro-Americans. The front of this indigo dyed blue wool trade cloth vest is decorated with striking star and lunar symbols in spot stiched beadwork. On the back a figure with wings outspread emerges from a buffalo head. The buffalo is an important player, a keystone in Native spiritual value and the American flag may represent a symbol of power.
