This unusual hat represents a blending of the Tlingit clan hat, the Aleut hunting visor, and the Kodiak style duck-billed hats. The upright front paws and the short snout identify the carving as a bear. The carver imitated the texture and coloration of a brown bear’s fur on the limbs by marking the surface with close parallel lines and painting it red and black. Copper detailing is seen in the ears, nose, mouth, and paws.
