Description:
Textile weavers greatly admired a good quality batten, a tool used in the weaving process. These two short battens, which were used in the weaving of sashes and belts, are delicately engraved with floral and deer imagery. Carved designs are rarely seen on battens. Battens were slipped between the warp threads to hold them apart and to make a shed through which the weft threads are passed. The battens also packed the weft threads in place and kept the textile tight.
