Description:
This toggle, a hunter’s tool, was used to pull working sleds and game such as seals. It was likely also used as a powerful charm that was attached to a hunter’s clothing or belt. The carving is thought to symbolize a man transforming into a polar bear. Central Yup’ik artists still depict such human-animal transformations in their carvings.
