Description:
Jacket, ca. 1890-1910
Teton Sioux (Lakota), North or South Dakota
Hide, cloth, glass beads, weasel fur, pigment
The fraternity of military men, friend and foe alike, resulted in a cross exchange of clothing forms. This jacket was inspired by American-style coats and is often referred to as a scout jacket. One of Buffalo Bill Cody’s signature costumes included an elaborately decorated scout jacket. The representation of six Sioux warriors with crossed flags, a star, and American bald eagles shows how easily symbols of the American military were absorbed into Plains Indian symbolism.
