The angularity of the figure’s face and body on this carved comb shows the Lower Columbia River region’s preference for geometric stylization. The figure is decorated with two dot-in-circle motifs that mark the heart and navel—power points of the man’s spirit. These circles also accent the shoulders, the hip joints, and the heart or belly of the two animals at the top of the comb. These two animals resemble the one on the handle of the sheep horn ladle to your left.
