The effigies on most pipe bowls are self-directed; that is, the face of the effigy is directed towards the smoker. Pipe smoking allowed for meditation upon one’s guardian spirit. Many stone-carved pipe bowls have survived, but there is considerable evidence that the carved wooden pipe bowls were common from the lower Great Lakes eastward. Since early Colonial times, wooden pipe bowls were usually lined with metal.
