Historically the Zuni used jars decorated with small animal effigies in their ceremonies. In the early 1900s the Zuni began to make animal effigy decorated pots for tourists and frog effigy jars were made in great numbers. This jar with its unusual owl heads and its worn surface suggest that the jar was used by the Zuni rather than having been made for sale. Zuni design elements are characterized by a flowing and curving line and the tiny birds that encircle the jar.
