The Apache used large shallow trays for winnowing and parching seeds. The beauty of their basketry was admired by collectors and tourists and the Apache began to make them for sale around 1900. Apache basket weavers used black devil’s claw and red yucca root to create complex geometric and abstract elements. Many baskets including this one have petaled elements and multi-pointed stars in the center of the design.
