This small bowl’s distinctive portrayal of a raven is related to the flying raven imagery seen on raven rattles, such as the Coast Tsimishian one in the corner case to your right. The gentle upward arc of the raven's head and beak on the bowl is similar to the fluid curves found on many raven rattles. The bowl also retains the sculptural forms of a grease dish. Small bowls with thick sides such as this one were often used by children.
