After the first quarter of the 19th century, cornhusk became a prominent weaving material. Smaller-sized bags were another innovation in the construction and the design of Plateau bags. Weavers added leather straps for easier carrying. Surface design on some bags from this period also became more elaborate. Dynamic designs such as this appealed to the tastes of non-Natives and Plateau women were never at a loss to create visually complex work.
