Description:
The birchbark on this Penobscot box is decorated with a type of decorative technique known as sgraffito. The dark inner layer of birchbark is used as a surface that the artist then scrapes in part to reveal the light layer beneath. Here the image of a moose and a stag, two animals of great importance to traditional Woodlands economies, are realistically portrayed.
