The three-dimensional carving of an animal on a bowl is an important expression in northern Northwest Coast art. Such modeling of the animal’s features gives the appearance that it is emerging from the form of the bowl. The imagery is readily identified as a bird, but it could be interpreted as a raven, seagull, merganser, or petrel, among others.
