Description:
Potlatch hosts often gave bowls such as this one as feast laden gifts to their guests. Such generous acts included the rich foods of the feast and the finely carved vessel in which it was served. The carver portrayed a seal with a human beneath its jaw. The image appears as if the person is wearing the head of the seal as a mask, assuming its identity in the sharing of its life-energy.
