Non-Natives have described these distinctively shaped baskets with their narrow, raised opening and angular shoulder as bottleneck baskets, seed jars and treasure baskets. Yokuts, Kawaiisu and Tubatulabal weavers in central California excelled in this particular basket tradition. Many bottleneck baskets including this one have dark red wool tufts accented with elegant black quail feathers that encircle the edge of the shoulder. The two horizontal bands of diamonds are referred to as a rattlesnake motif, another feature associated with bottleneck baskets.
