Description:
Excerpt from Thaw Catalog:
This is an example of the so-called "spaghetti-style," in which the engraved design tends to dissolve into a cluster of intertwining lines and perforations. Gorgets decorated in this style have been found in eastern Tennessee and nearby parts of Alabama, and a relationship has been suggested with the art of the Florida Gulf coast.
The birdman pictured on these gorgets was a most popular design, identified by the roached hairdo, large round eye, pointed nose, and the open mouth filled with teeth. (c.f Fundaburk and Fundaburk Foreman 1957, pl. 42, 45 & 46).
