Hunters disabled sea lions and otters with harpoons and then killed them with elaborately carved clubs such as this one. The carving on the clubs often depicted a sea lion. Sea lions are skilled maritime predators and their carved imagery on clubs was likely intended as a visual pun alluding to the superior skills of the hunter and the hunted.
