The exceptionally fine beadworking talents of Joyce Growing Thunder Fogarty are evident in this necklace. She has beaded an image of a spirited Appaloosa who rears almost upright. Colorful hoofprints on the ground further suggest the vibrant nature of this horse. The Appaloosa figured prominently in the heritage of Plains and Plateau Indians, especially the Nez Perce. Today the Appaloosa is an important part of the year-long Nez Perce Mounted Scholars Program for young students.
