Subtle aesthetics often characterize Chumash baskets. This basket's weaver used the earth-toned colors of black dyed juncas and white sumac to create her design on a golden juncas background. Chumash baskets are remarkably lightweight for their size because the juncas stems that form the basket's coil foundations are hollow. The Chumash used basin-shaped coiled baskets such as this for preparing meals and as winnowing trays.
