Description:
Night Game - Yankee Stadium is Fasanella's largest baseball painting, and captures the drama and pageantry of major league baseball on a grand scale. Fasanella tilts the playing field into a vertical position, enlivens the grass with flecks of paint, and renders the brightly-colored spectators (mostly women) with joy and affection. The stadium appears huge, yet opens onto the street in the foreground to welcome the viewer inside. Outside the stadium, Fasanella comments upon the decline of urban neighborhoods, with a focus on social injustice. At the left, Fasanella depicts a jail full of African American prisoners, and the graffiti on the crane contains references to Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
