Messrs. Smith & Co. Ship Yard

Title:
Messrs. Smith & Co. Ship Yard
Date:
Identifier:

Description:
This painting was exhibited at the National Academy in 1834 as Messrs. Smith & Co. Ship Yard. The yard was located at the foot of Fourth St., on the East River in Manhattan, where such famous ships as "The Rainbow" and "Sea Witch" were built. While little is known of James Fulton Pringle, Smith & Dimon Shipyard survives as a remarkable document that captures the activities of an early 19th-century shipyard. Undoubtedly commissioned by the shipyard's owner, the painting depicts typical activities - sawing, hewing, shaping, and bending timbers - as well as a nearly completed hull.
