Description:
The precise and compelling rendering of facial features in these portraits is typical of Brewster's work, yet Brewster's difficulty in rendering hands is notable. One of the man's hands is awkwardly painted and the other is conveniently placed within his vest so Brewster could avoid painting it. The inclusion of the ear of the Chippendale chair in both portraits is also a hallmark of Brewster's style. The backgrounds, however, are a departure from Brewster's usual approach although they appear markedly similar to the background of Francis O. Watts. This similarity led some scholars to speculate that these portraits depict Watts' parents, Francis and Mehitable Watts.
