Three-quarter portrait of man and woman, both seated. She sits in a chair with carved crest rail. She wears a dark dress, white eyelet collar and pin at collar which has been tinted gold like her ring. He sits next to her and rests his arm on her chair back. He wears a dark coat, vest, necktie, and white shirt. Both their faces and possibly their hands have been tinted. Matte is double elliptical. Preserver is stamped brass. Case front and back have separated. Case is brown leather with same front and back design of a girl with basket of flowers, butterflies and scrollwork border. Inside of case has gold stamped border and case front lined with red cut velvet with scroll work design. Two clasps. On back of plate in grease pencil "7496". On paper lining in back of image in case stamped and penciled: "7496." On paper in back of image: "Earl C. Chase/Cooperstown/No. 1/ 4+ 5 1/2 print 7496." Paper with case: "David Chase & Sybil Barnum Chase, ca. 1841, Middlefield, NY."
