Dance Apron
Date:
Identifier:

Description:
This dance apron depicts a bear – its head and paws are readily recognizable while its body is abstract. The dance apron’s complex twined and braided weaving is rare. The technique is generally referred to as Chilkat weaving in recognition of the particular tribe of Tlingit women who excelled in this art form. Chilkat weaving allows the weaver to incorporate curvilinear designs and formlines: an organizing design principle consisting of a flowing outline, usually rendered in black. Men painted the design on a wood board and women used it for reference to execute the weaving.
